The balancing act of being a scrunchy mama
Being a mama in today’s world certainly has its challenges. With the help of the internet, many of us have become increasingly aware in the last few years of all the dangerous chemicals found in our everyday products. This ranges from our food to cosmetics, there is too often an ingredient that poses a risk to our health. Even more frightening danger to our children’s health. From baby food pouches found to have traces of lead to sunscreen containing the hormone disruptor oxybenzone, there is always something we should be looking out for.
I heard the term “crunchy” a while back but it was not until recently that I heard the terms “scrunchy” and “silky”. For those of you who may not be familiar with any of these terms Crunchy typically means a lifestyle that focuses on holistic ideas (medicated free births, holistic medicines, no screen time etc)
While silky refers to those who enjoy all the modern conveniences without worry. Silky parents typically love technology and have not made a habit of reading the ingredients of their children’s food. These definitions are not absolute, and everyone may have a varying idea on what these terms mean to them.
I have been on a low toxin lifestyle pursuit for a few years now, but I have only recently heard the term “scrunchy.” This is the term I best resonate with. Scrunchy is crunchy with some silky. The ratio of crunchy to silky can vary from person to person, and that is OKAY!
This world is huge, and we are all not going to parent the same. That said, I bet most of us are trying to do our best. Often, we do not have all the answers and need to make decisions with the information we have.
I have only been a mom for about six months and can honestly say it the best part of my life. However, at times it can be so difficult and overwhelming. Here is this small, precious, perfect and helpless little boy that is relying on me to make every decision for him. This is a responsibility that I take very seriously.
In the pursuit to hopefully give him the very best, I have become meticulous about ensuring all the products that I use on him are the cleanest that I can afford.
Unfortunately for most of us moms neither money nor time is limitless. That is why a big part of being scrunchy or low tox lifestyle is trying to find a balance.
A balance between what is clean and what is affordable. A balance between making things from scratch and needing that convenience.
What I hope this blog accomplishes is to help simplify all these factors to make it easier for moms to make decisions. Whether it be on diapers, lotions or whatever it might be I hope to create a page that helps pull all the information together. Where the ingredients of similar products are displayed with the prices from several places to help find the best for their little ones at the best prices to help other moms find that balance.
